Region: Vermont, USA

Notes: Named in honor of Spencer Chamberlain, the hero of the Runaway Pond disaster of 1810, in Glover, Vermont.  An attempt to divert south-flowing water from Long Pond northward toward mills in the village of Glover, ended in disaster. When it became evident that a colossal mistake had been made, Chamberlain ran ahead of the growing flood to warn everyone, including the wife of the miller. There was much destruction as two billion gallons of water flowed toward Lake Memphremagog, but no lives were lost thanks to Spencer Chamberlain, Glover’s fastest runner.
