Notes: From the Traditional Tune Archive: “There is a small village called Childgrove near Chichester in England, but so far there is no known connection with the title of Playford’s country dance and tune. Researcher Graham Christian suggests the title may have been “Child’s Grove,” perhaps named for Sir Josiah Child (c. 1630-1699), a wealthy merchant who became Governor of the East India Company, and a very powerful man indeed. Child purchased the estate of Wanstead House in Essex in 1673, and Christian speculates the title may in some way be connected with either the estate or its gardens and grounds.”
